Now that the new year is under way,
you may find your resolve to live a more healthful life waning. Resolutions become difficult to carry on past the initial enthusiasm. Motivation starts losing steam.
What if I told you there was a medical breakthrough that would promote a healthier way to live? What if it promised:
No side effects
Improved love life
Increased compassion for friends, family, the world around, and yourself
Protection against inflammation
Decreased stress hormones
Protection against chronic diseases
No special equipment
Available anywhere in the world
You would probably say either I was delusional, or sign me up!
As a matter of fact, it is currently available and free of charge! It is meditation.
No eye rolls please. It is as easy as breathing and a time investment that matches your schedule.
Meditation can be practiced in a variety of forms.
Mindfulness meditation can be done anywhere, anytime, and can be done with little investment of time. All it requires is that you pay attention to the present, moment by moment, nonjudgementally, with a focus on sensations in and around you. For example, the other day I heard a flock of geese calling overhead, I looked up into the blue sky and witnessed how they called to one another and took turns taking the lead. I had engaged my senses of hearing and seeing. I watched until they flew out of sight. It took about one minute. Boom! Mindful meditation complete!
The breath is another way to employ meditation. You can simple follow your breath over a set period time of your choice. Your mind will wander. Compassionately bring yourself back to the breath. The magic here is when you start again. Belly breathing works well too. Slowly breathe in through the nose so that the belly expands and breathe out slowly through your mouth. You can do this for a set number of breaths or set an amount of time to do it for. You can easily do this sitting in traffic or waiting in line. Meditation complete!
Another type of meditation is the more formal style where you sit for a period of time on a regular basis. This is done silently with the focus on the breath or a mantra. Other choices include listening to guided meditation or guided imagery.
There are lots of choices to fit any mood or busy life style. Give it a try and reap the benefits of healthier sense of wellbeing.
